Over the last few years, cannabidiol, or CBD for short, has skyrocketed in popularity. In health and wellness communities across the country, there is a great deal of excitement about CBD and the many benefits that it offers. Many who are searching for a safe, natural, and highly effective way to improve their overall level of wellness and find relief for many common conditions have used CBD with great success. After all, who wouldn’t want to sleep more restfully, feel calmer and more relaxed, be less bothered by daily aches and sore muscles, and generally feel better? CBD provides all of those benefits. Even with all of the excitement, however, there are still some questions about CBD and any side effects it may have. One commonly asked question is whether or not CBD use causes weight gain. While this is understandable, there is a good amount of evidence to suggest that making CBD a regular part of your health and wellness routine may, in fact, do the opposite and encourage the maintenance of a healthy weight in those who use it.
Why the Confusion about CBD?
As CBD is still fairly new to many communities across the country, a certain amount of confusion and misconception about its properties and its use still exists, and this is understandable. Many know that CBD is extracted from the hemp variety of the cannabis plant. Hearing the word “cannabis” often leads people to make an understandable – but erroneous – association with marijuana. Marijuana is also a product of the cannabis plant, and like CBD, it has therapeutic properties. But it is also distinct from CBD in many important ways. Perhaps the most important, for the purposes of regular use and issues of overeating and weight gain, is that marijuana contains significant amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol, better known as THC, whereas CBD products, derived from the hemp varietal of the cannabis plant, do not.
THC is the compound in marijuana that is responsible for causing its psychoactive effects and for producing the “high” that users experience after taking it. In addition to causing the feeling of being high, THC has also been shown to increase sensitivity to flavors and scents by using naturally occurring neural networks. This ultimately has the effect of persuading the brain that the body is hungry, even when, in reality, it might not be. As a result, those who are high often find themselves overeating in that altered mental state.
In contrast to marijuana, which contains high levels of THC, to be federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill, CBD products must be extracted from hemp plants, which contain .3% or less THC. The good news for those interested in CBD, then, is that they can receive the health benefits they desire without any unwanted psychoactive side effects (including the desire to overeat) that they don’t. CBD is different in other important ways, too – particularly in the way it interacts with the body and the body’s important processes. In fact, some of these interactions may actually serve to promote weight loss with regular use.
How Does CBD Interact with the Body?
Each of us has an endocannabinoid system in our body. This system plays a very important role in the body – that of maintaining homeostasis, or internal balance. The endocannabinoid system achieves this work by utilizing a network of cannabinoid receptors. That network receives and translates signals from cannabinoids – those that our bodies produce naturally and those, like CBD, which are produced by outside sources that we ingest. The signals sent by cannabinoids help the endocannabinoid system to regulate a number of important processes within our bodies like temperature, secretion of neurotransmitters, and metabolism, to name only a few.
CBD has been shown to send signals to the CB1 and CB2 receptors that help to boost metabolism. As many of us know, the effect of an increased metabolism is that we burn more calories than we otherwise would. Understandably, this ultimately promotes weight loss or the maintenance of a healthy weight, depending, of course, upon other factors like exercise and healthy eating habits as well.
In addition to the way that CBD interacts with the metabolic system, it is also important to note, for the purposes of overeating and weight gain, that CBD has repeatedly been shown to elevate mood and promote overall feelings of calm and well-being. Most of us have heard of “emotional eating” – it is a natural tendency for many to overeat as a way of reducing stress. It makes sense, then, that when a supplement is added to your daily routine that helps reduce stress and improve emotional and mental well-being, that emotional overeating will decrease as well. This, in turn, helps to prevent weight gain and promote a healthy weight.
